When your air conditioning or heating system fails, you are faced with the choice to either repair the existing equipment or to purchase new equipment. There are three main factors to consider when making your decision:

The life expectancy of the HVAC equipment

The current SEER or efficiency of the HVAC equipment

The current condition of the HVAC equipment

Most HVAC equipment has the life expectancy of 8 to 12 years.  If you have your HVAC equipment professionally maintained or tuned-up every year, your system could last even longer.  Repairing some older units could be problematic due to a discontinuation of parts due to government regulation or manufacturing processes.  Many times parts are discontinued which causes them to be more expensive or unavailable. The older the HVAC equipment, the more expensive it is to find and replace the part.

Every HVAC system is given a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating).  The SEER rating of a system is the cooling output during a typical cooling-season divided by the total electric energy input during the same period. The higher the system's SEER rating the more energy efficient it is.  For example, a 14 SEER system is 40% more efficient in cooling/heating for the same amount of electricity used than a 10 SEER unit.  Most systems older than 8 years are rated 8 to 10 SEER.  You cannot create a higher SEER in heating/cooling equipment by repairing the system.  Your power bills will continue to rise while the system's performance continues to degrade with age.  A new system with a higher SEER, will save you MONEY on your utility bills and pay for itself in energy savings within a few years.

If your HVAC system has not been maintained or has frequent breakdowns, replacement should be considered.  Little can be done to repair equipment that is in poor condition except to perform costly repairs.  These repairs can add to be more costly than buying a new system. Repairing your HVAC equipment may be the cheapest solution in the short term but may be more expensive in the future.
